Sterile water for injection preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative is what makes the vial multi-dose: it inhibits microbial growth, so the stopper can be punctured repeatedly over a working period rather than the vial being discarded after one withdrawal. It is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilised peptide.

Benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial reproduction rather than killing existing organisms outright. That distinction is why aseptic technique still matters at every withdrawal — the preservative buys working time, it does not make the vial forgiving.
Unpreserved sterile water carries no bacteriostat, so it is single-use — any organism introduced at first puncture multiplies freely. It remains the correct choice where benzyl alcohol would interfere with the work.
